Initial Research I am going to be researching the Al Faya Lodge by Anarchitect in the Sharjah desert. Al Faya Lodge is a hotel and a saltwater spa which sits in the red sand at the foot of Mount Alvaah in the Emirate of Sharjah. The Lodge was once only two concrete buildings with only a clinic and a grocery shop centuries ago. Anarchitecture took the building and made it a five-room boutique hotel. A new building was developed, and a saltwater spa with an open-air swimming pool was housed. Anarchitect used the dull rust colour of weathered steel to imitate highlights of the interventions in the old stone buildings. The metal used was also chosen to utilize the rich iron ore deposits in the area, which was also close to the first petrol pumps that were built in the United Arab Emirates. Project Statement For my AP1 project, I will create a commercial establishment, a boutique hotel -inspired by The Cave, a rammed-earth Stone Villa in Mexico. The project will take place in an eight-week period. The hotel’s theme is the Primitive, aimed at vacationers for short stays. I will be using materials that can be found in the desert around Dubai to construct the hotel. This project includes a sketch, a floor plan, and a physical and digital 3D outcome. The project is called the Primal Boutique. The project will also include all the facilities inside a normal hotel, such as a restaurant, a pool, and a gymnasium. The hotel will also have a symbolic structure on top of its highest building. This will give the resort its own unique identity. The 3D outcome will be made using mixed media and materials that are like the textures that can be found in the desert. Welcome to Spring Term 2024 Welcome to the Spring Term for 2024. I am writing this blog as the beginning point for this new term. For this term, I am looking forward to learning new skills while strengthening the ones I developed in the last term in 2023. For instance, I would like to learn about new software that can help me in future projects and build up my digital skills. I am not quite satisfied with the outcome of my last term's drawings and sketches, and I am interested in improving my skills. Improving this will majorly help me to produce a better outcome for this term's project. As for my digital skills, I have been using Photoshop, SketchUp and Pixlr. However, I barely touch the surface of mastering this software. Therefore, I intend to sharpen my skills and explore new software such as Live Home 3D and AutoCAD that will be useful in the long run.
