What is Copyright?
Copyright is the legal ownership of someone towards an intellectual property.Copyright law and copyright originated in the UK from a concept of common law, the Statute of Anne 1709. It became statutory with the passing of the Copyright Act 1911. The current act is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. The law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangements of published editions rights to control how their material may be used. How does Copyright protects your work?
Copyright protects your work from unauthorised copying or theft of your intellectual property, such as online documents, images, and research.
In other words...
Copyright law protects the rights of creators by preventing others from copying, distributing, renting, lending, performing, showing, playing, or making adaptations of their work without permission. It also prohibits unauthorised display of the work publicly or on the internet. (Service, G.D.,2015)
How do I copyright my work?
Copyright is a legal right that automatically protects your original creations, such as images or research, not based on someone else's work found online. You don't need to pay for copyright protection, as it is automatically assigned to you once you create something original. However, you may choose to register your intellectual property, like images, research, or documents, to have legally recognised ownership of them. You can add the copyright symbol (©) to your work.
How long does copyright last?
When a literary work is original, it is protected under copyright law. The duration of protection depends on when the work was created rather than on how popular it is at any given time. A recent work may be protected until the next century, as copyright lasts for 70 years after the author's death. We need to know when the author died to determine the critical date. (UK Copyright Service, 2022)How can you stop people from using your work?
It's difficult to prevent others from stealing or using your intellectual property since people will often do whatever it takes to make their lives easier. However, you can take steps to protect your work. Start by registering your intellectual property online and taking legal action against anyone who steals your work. This will establish a reputation that your work will not be messed with. Scammers and others who steal your work will think twice before doing so, knowing that it could result in legal action.
