WEEK THREE: Final major project - research and design boards

Final major project - research and design boards

Subject Area: Architecture

Project Title: Tree House Residential Area

PROJECT AIM

For my architecture project, I will be designing a modern treehouse for a residential area located in Malaysia. The treehouse will be built using the trees in a forest as the foundation, and sustainable materials will be used for the house. The chosen materials will feature a modern look and be able to withstand different weather conditions like heat waves and thunderstorms, ensuring the tree lasts long and is safe for the residents. I plan to create 2-4 architectural design boards, including the concept and concept drawings, floor plans, elevations, site details, environmental factors, and a 3D design made in Sketchup software. The project will be completed by the deadline at the end of November.

THE ARCHITECT WHO INSPIRED ME

Frank Lloyd Wright, a native of Wisconsin, brought about a revolution in 20th-century architecture, and his upbringing in the Midwest played a significant role in shaping his design sensibility. Wright was inspired by the simplistic buildings scattered across the American plains, which led him to create the Prairie House style. This was in contrast to the Victorian aesthetic of that time, which emphasised dark decor and busy embellishments inside and outside. Instead, Wright used clean geometries with a focus on horizontal planes. One of his most famous works is Falling Water, a Bear Run, PA residence he designed for Pittsburgh department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann in 1935. This house features stacked rectangular balconies that appear to float over the natural waterfall incorporated into the house. Later in his career, Wright shifted towards curvilinear elements, which found its most celebrated expression in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

TARGET AUDIENCE

STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE

Architects find inspiration in trees and often use sustainable materials to support the weight of buildings while maintaining a modern look. Building structures around trees requires meticulous attention to detail, innovative material selection and a solid grasp of structural design. For some, tree houses evoke memories of imaginative childhood hideaways, while others enjoy the technical challenge of creating within the natural boundaries of a forest.

As an example, the 7th Room, located within the renowned TreeHotel in Northern Sweden, is a beautiful treehouse among many others in the retreat. It offers guests a breathtaking view of the Lapland treetops and Lule River. The design of the room focuses on nature, with large windows that blur the boundaries between the inside and outside, a netted terrace suspended above the forest floor, and a tree that stretches through the cabin. The wooden interior of the room and its unique location in the treetops make it a modern take on the traditional Nordic cabin, celebrating the surrounding pine forest.

Site plan analysis

Soil type, location, and elevation produce distinctive vegetation zones: tidal swamp forest on the coast, freshwater- and peat-swamp forest on the ill-drained parts of the coastal plains, lowland rainforest on the well-drained parts of the coastal plains and foothills up to an elevation of about 2,000 feet (600 metres).

Construction technologies and materials

Using locally-sourced materials such as wood, rocks, and concrete, it is possible to construct sustainable buildings on trees. The big and sturdy trees found in Malaysia can serve as a solid foundation for these buildings. However, additional support may be required in the form of concrete beams or wooden pillars.

Environment

This modern treehouse, by architect Andrea Wenning from the German firm Baumraum, is in Halle, Germany. It is built around an oak tree in the backyard of a private residence, 11 meters high above the ground. It has a double bed, fitted inside, and a window seat opposite to it, in addition to an outside deck.

The characteristic vegetation of Malaysia is dense evergreen rainforest. Rainforest still covers more than two-fifths of the peninsula and some two-thirds of Sarawak and Sabah; another fraction of the country is under swamp forest.

Form and function.

Form and Function The "residential tree houses" concept is designed mainly to avoid deforestation and maintain wildlife in Malaysia. It offers a unique experience and a new environment for the next generation of families and tourists who want to live in this residential area.

Research on the National Flower Of United Arab Emirates

For this post, I will share my research about the national flower of The United Arab Emirates, the Tribulus Omannense. I will create a boutique hotel in Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai, for my project. I will symbolise the country with the nation's flower, Tribulus Omannense. Since a boutique hotel is targeted at travellers, the concept of my hotel is inspired by the flower. Tribulus Omanense is a small flowering plant in the Zygophyllaceae family. Its delicate, yellow flowers have five petals and a distinct, spiky appearance (Anne, A. 2023). The flower is suitable for creating a hotel because of its simplicity, and it is easy to divide the rooms for the hotel. Since it has five petals, I made each petal a section for the hotel, for example, a lobby section and the rest of the rooms for each petal. Each petal will be enough to fit two hotel rooms. Although the number of rooms in my boutique hotel will be small, this will ensure a more personalised service to the customers, and the h...

WEEK SIX: Contacts

This is my contact page where you can reach out to me. I have listed the location of my workplace, which is the Art Factory. As I haven't decided whether to add my phone number or not, I have included a random number for now. You can contact me through my email address, and my website links such as Blogger and Instagram are also provided. This page which contains my contacts is a new page that I did and a button that leads to the page. The image above is a lightbox that I added at the very bottom of all of my pages.

Research on boutique hotel (Edited)

This post will be about my research on boutique hotels. The simplest definition of a boutique hotel is “a small, sophisticated, and fashionable business or establishment“. (Giulietta, 2024) Boutique hotels are mainly for people who travel for a short time and want a personalised experience during their stay. The boutique hotel interests me because of its size and the difference in experience compared to a typical hotel. The main reason behind this is that boutique hotels have better quality control, ensuring the guest experiences a comfortable stay. The attention to detail in these hotels' design makes them unique. Boutique hotels are usually made to be one-of-a-kind (WOOLF, 2023) and with that being stylish and trendy. Their designs are more towards elegance and luxury, but the prices are still reasonable. This is suitable for my project as the location for it is in Dubai. A developing country where there are a lot of travellers and tourists passing through. Also, Dubai is known f...
